Outdoor Environment

Dr. Montessori had a deep respect and reverence for nature. She believed that we

should use nature to inspire children.

We have a unique opportunity to infuse young children with an appreciation for

enjoyment of the natural world, to connect them to nature, and to immerse them in the

mysteries of the great outdoors. We strive to extend the lessons and student interest to

the outdoors through use of our nature trails, labyrinth, gardens, and outdoor classroom

area.

The Prepared Environment

Dr. Montessori’s idea of the prepared environment was that everything the child came in

contact with would facilitate and maximize independent learning and exploration. This

calm, well-ordered environment has a lot of movement and activity. Here, they

experience a combination of freedom and self-discipline, as guide by the environment

and self-discipline, as guided by the environment.

There are generally six aspects to the prepared environment: Freedom; Structure and

Order; Beauty; Nature and Reality; Social Environment; and Intellectual Environment.
